Why Study The Apostles’ Creed?

Series: I Believe In – The Apostles’ Creed pt 1

Jesus said, “wherever you go, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 20 And teach them to faithfully follow all that I have commanded you. And never forget that I am with you every day, even to the completion of this age.”  Matt 28:19-20 TPT

Creed comes from the Latin credo, which means,

“I believe.”  For 2,000 years the Apostles’ Creed has provided a summary of core Christian doctrine.

Doctrine is what a church believes, teaches and confesses on the basis of the Word of God.

All Christians believe more than is contained in the Apostles’ Creed, but none can believe less. – R. Albert Mohler Jr.

Many people base their belief on their own understanding of who God is.

Their belief is emotion driven.

In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes. Judges 21:25

What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. ― A.W. Tozer

The Apostles Creed instructs, guides, defends and preserves the truths that leads one to salvation.

Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”  31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” 32 And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household.  Acts 16:30-31

The Apostles’ Creed is Useful and Necessary

It defines and summarizes the truth.

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

  • It corrects error.
  • It guides God’s people to stay on track.
  • It teaches and reminds us to confess our faith.
  • It connects us to the faith of our fathers and others.
  • It equips the church universal for unity in the faith.

Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. Eph 4:12-13
