The History Channel, www.history.com has a history of Valentine’s Day including the pagan background. Emperor Claudius the second would not let his soldiers get married so a priest, Father Valentine would secretly marry soldiers to their brides. He was imprisoned for breaking the no marriage law and the day he was to be executed he passed on the first Valentine card to a girl he had fallen in love with while incarcerated.
