How to Be A Hero

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself. ~ Joseph Campbell

  • A hero is extraordinary.

(Jesus calls and empowers the ordinary)

When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” Luke 5:8

…Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus. Luke 5:10

…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere…. Acts 1:8

Jesus changed the definition of neighbor from “my people” to “all people”.

Your actions carry more weight than your words as a witness.

The life of a true believer is the life of a hero.

  • A hero serves Jesus by serving others.

Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life. 15 He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.

2 Cor 5:14-15

  • A Hero is humble

(He or she does not seek personal glory)

When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”

27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” Matt 14:26-27

  • A hero is courageous. (Overcomes fear with faith)

Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” Matt 14:28

  • A hero makes personal sacrifices to save others.

(The new life is a life of sacrifice)

“Yes, come,” Jesus said.

So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.  Matt 14:29-30

To consistently live the life of a hero one must stay focused on JESUS (The Hero)

Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” Matt 14:31

The new life of a hero is a life of worshiping the Son of God.

When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed. Matt 14:32-3
