When Love Is Tough  Father’s Day

It’s tough, but if you want to really live you must really love.

The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Luke 10:27

“Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” Luke 10:28

A Bad Attitude

  • I am self-centered.

The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Luke 10:29

Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.  Luke 10:30

“By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. Luke 10:31

  • I will care if it is not inconvenient or if there is a benefit.

A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.  Luke 10:32

A Tough Attitude of Love

“Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.  Luke 10:33

  • Aware of needs and moved to comfort

Learn the needs of others.  Listen

He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 2 Cor 1:4

  • Love sacrificially.

Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.  Luke 10:34

  • Make serving others a priority.

If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say, “Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.” Pro 3:28

  • Commit to finishing what you start.

The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’  Luke 10:35

  • Make all people neighbors.

“Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.  Luke 10:36

The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”

Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” Luke 10:37

“Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” Luke 10:28
