Don’t Be A Bad Friend   My Friend Jesus #12 John 4:43-54

But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown. Luke 4:24

Samaritans believed Jesus while his own people did not.

At the end of the two days, Jesus went on to Galilee. 44  (For) He himself had said that a prophet is not honored in his own hometown.  John 4:43-44

Yet the Galileans welcomed him, for they had been in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration and had seen everything he did there.  John 4:45

Galileans welcomed him for his miracles.  They want him for what he can do, and not for who he is.

As he traveled through Galilee, he came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine.  John 4:46a

Five Signs of a Bad Friend

  1. Only talks to you when he wants something
  2. He talks more than listens
  3. He is only happy when you respond the way he wants
  4. He bails on you when the relationship is hard
  5. He excludes you when he thinks you would disagree.

There was a government official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick. John 4:46b

When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum to heal his son, who was about to die.  John 4:48

Even Atheists cry out for help.

Jesus asked, “Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?”  John 4:48

Jesus knows people are naturally bad friends.

Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him. 24 But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people25 No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart. John 2:23-25

We are bad friends when we want Jesus’ power more than we want or trust Jesus.

The official pleaded, “Lord, please come now before my little boy dies.”  John 4:49

Jesus answered, “Trust me.”

Then Jesus told him, “Go back home. Your son will live!”  John 4:50a

Trust is confidence backed up with action.

And the man believed what Jesus said and started home. John 4:50b

Jesus did not do what he asked.  (Please come now)

While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him with the news that his son was alive and well. John 4:51

He asked them when the boy had begun to get better, and they replied, “Yesterday afternoon at one o’clock his fever suddenly disappeared!” John 4:52

Then the father realized that that was the very time Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” John 4:53a

Trust God and he will use you to change the world.

And he and his entire household believed in Jesus. John 4:53b
