Jesus Spoke Life From The Cross
1) Forgotten – Warning, sin separates us from God.
At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Matt 27:46
He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. 1 Pet 2:24
This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. Col 1:21-22
2) Fulfilled – Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophecies.
Odds of one person fulfilling 8 prophecies is 1 in 1017
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” John 19:28
Then he said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Luke 24:44
3) Forgive – Jesus modeled forgiveness
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. Luke 23:34
“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies Pray for those who persecute you! Matt 5:43-44
4) Future – One day you will be with me in heaven.
39 One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!”
40 But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? 41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”
43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:39-43
5) Finished – He came with a mission.
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. 30 When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:28-30
Tetelestai – It is finished – debt paid in full
What did Jesus finish on the cross?
1) Substitution – died in my place 1 Pet 3:18
2) Justification – made me right with God Rom 4:25
3) Reconciliation – made my peace with God Rom 5:10
4) Adoption – Made me part of God’s family Rom 8:17
5) Redemption – bought my salvation with his blood
1 Pet 1:18-19
6) Propitiation – satisfied God’s justice 1 John 4:10
7) Forgiveness – took away my sins. Eph 1:7
God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
