Next Level Faith #4 – James 1:19-27

LEAP – Listen – Engage – Apply – Produce

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. James 1:22

1) Listen expectantly to God’s Word.

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, James 1:19a

Expect to hear all of it. (No selective Hearing)
Expect to personally engage.
Expect to trust.

Let go of anger. Anger distorts what you hear.

…and slow to get angry.
20 Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. James 1:19b-20

Anger is inconsistent with love and patience.

So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls. James 1:21

Living in disobedience hardens your heart and makes it difficult to listen.

2) Live God’s Word so you truly know it and know
God.

The Word of God is your spiritual mirror.

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. James 1:22

For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. James 1:23-24

But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. James 1:25

Jesus said: “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.” John 14:15

3) A heart made right will be evident in a life lived
right.

a. Right speech

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. James 1:26

b. Right sacrifice for others

Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress James 1:27a

c. Right value system in a wrong world.
and refusing to let the world corrupt you. James 1:27b

Jesus prayed for us;
I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. John 17:15
