Explore God #4

Nonreligious people believe religious people are;
• Judgmental
• Legalistic
• Hypocrites

Someone came to Jesus with this question: “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” Matt 19:16

He has followed the rules but knows something is missing.

Most religions teach that getting to heaven or to a better “life after death” is a matter of being a good person or following certain precepts or commands.

Nearly half of U.S. adults believe it doesn’t matter what religious faith you follow … Because they all teach the same lessons. ~ Barna

Religion is humanity’s attempt to reach God.

Problem with religion is a lack of certainty.

I’ve obeyed all these commandments,” the young man replied. “What else must I do?” Matt 19:20

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Rom 3:23

The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked. Matt 19:25

So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, 23 for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about. Acts 17:22-23

“God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. 31 For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.”
Acts 17:30-31

Christianity is God providing the way for people.
No one can be perfect. (Righteous)

Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.” Matt 19:26

Righteousness cannot be earned with works

For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. Rom 3:20

For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. Rom 3:25

Jesus opened the door for all who seek Him and believe.

1) The Way is through Jesus’ goodness, not ours.

2) The Way is a gift.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom 6:23

3) Believers live the Way for all to see
And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!” Rom 10:15
