Series: Emotions That Hold Back The Love #3

Source: Enemies of the Heart by Andy Stanley

If you are an angry person, it is killing you from the inside and blocking the love.

Anger is not a sin.  It’s what you do with anger that determines if it is a sin or not.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Eph 4:31

Most people justify or deny their anger.

  •  Blame it on others or events
  • Impossible to control
  • If I don’t yell or hit I am not angry.
  • I don’t get angry because I am spiritually mature.
  • I am just frustrated, not angry.

Most angry people need a second opinion other than their own.

Anger:  You owe me.  (someone owes me)

Anger destroys your heart and hurts innocent people.

Hurting people hurt people.

Angry people have to learn how to forgive.

Jesus said:  14 “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. 15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matt 6:14-15

Reasons people give for not forgiving:

  • It’s too hard
  • The offender needs to pay
  • I have forgiven (But not really)

How do you know if you haven’t? See Eph 4:31

Bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, slander, gossip, disrespect, sick feeling, hate, anxiety, depression, problem with relationships, …

Forgiving is cancelling the debt.

Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Eph 4:32

21 Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?

22 No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven! Matt 18:21-22

You, not the offender, pay  the consequence when you don’t forgive.

God forgives …..

Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt. Matt 18:27

When you don’t forgive the debt.

“But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars.  He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. Matt 18:28

Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt Matt 18:34

Who do you need to release from debt?
