The freedom to love God and love people is blocked by the emotions of guilt, anger, greed, and jealousy.

There are only two ways to resolve this tension:

  • Someone has to pay up
  • Someone has to cancel the debt

Your relationship with God and your relationship with people are linked.

I owe God.  It’s I debt I cannot pay.

22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God freely and graciously declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. Rom 3:22-24

God paid with Jesus and cancelled the debt.

I owe people.

23 “So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, 24 leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God. Matt 5:23-24

I owe God because I owe people.

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.  But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 john 1:8-9

We are to confess to God and the offended party.

Biblical Confession is not just saying “I am sorry”.

Confession is not about conscience relief.

Confession is just one step in a sequence of steps that leads the guilty out of darkness and into the light; it’s simply the beginning of a process that ultimately leads to change in lifestyle or behavior.  ~ Andy Stanley

 Confession

  • Repentance

…“Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” 2 Tim 2:19

“Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day.47 It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations,[f] beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ Luke 24:46-47

  • Restitution

Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!” Luke 19:8

  • Restoration

Confession will break the cycle of sin

Confession will dissolve the guilt.
