Romans 6:15-23

Grace gives you the opportunity to be who God wants you to be.

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Butology:  I once was but now

Before Christ and After Christ …..  BC/AD

BC: Slaves to sin, Shame, Death, No righteousness, Spiritual Separation

AD: Free from sin, Growing to be like Christ, Righteous choice to make Christ master, a life connected to God   Life

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.  Eph 5:1 NLT

 1)    BC you naturally want to sin.

BC:  Sin = Pleasure = Pain

AD:  Righteousness = Pain = Pleasure (Joy,Peace)

15 Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! 16 Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.

Pleasure is our desire.  BC our desires are evil.

Your master is the voice you obey.

The more you are a slave to your evil desires the deeper you go into a sinful life. (Easier)

19 Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.

We don’t choose to do holy spiritual disciplines naturally.  You have to make them a habit.

 2)  AD … But now ….  I am free to be

You chose to be a servant of Christ (righteousness)

The more you live as a servant of Christ the more you become holy.

When you live a holy life you realize the power of God’s grace and mercy as you are ashamed of who you used to be.

20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right. 21 And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom.

Free to be obedient to righteousness

17 Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.

 Free to live holy lives.

18 Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.

Free to Represent God as his kids. See Eph 5:1

22 But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.
