The Devolution of Man … Romans 1:18-24

In the beginning

So God created human beings in his own image.  In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Gen 1:27

Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame. Gen 2:25

Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! Gen 1:31

But …  Man was tempted to choose self over God

The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her.

He chose self … The beginning of devolution

So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. Gen 3:6-7

17 This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.  Roman 1:17

 But …

18 But God shows his anger (wrath) from heaven against all sinful, wicked (godless) people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

Paul sets out to convince people how far from God they are and continue to devolve.

Man believes in evolution … Man started low and climbed high.

God says the truth is that man started high and devolved to low.

 1)     Man knows but rejects God  (Replaced God) The light of God makes man uncomfortable in his sin.

19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

God reveals through creation and conscience.

 Visible, Intelligible, Constant, Eternal, Divine

Creation comes from the word “Poima” (Poem)

For we are God’s masterpiece (Poima) Eph 2:10

 2)    Rejection of God leads to darkness and confusion. (Devolution of intelligence)

21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.

Confusion and darkness sets in as man is the center of his own life so there is no clarity of truth.

There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.  Prov 14:12

 3)     Devolution from worshiping the creation instead of the creator.

23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

Next Week: 24 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired.
