“Christianity has not so much been tried and found wanting, as it has been found difficult and left untried.” G. K. Chesterton
Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me. 24 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. Luke 9:23-24
Battle Ready: It takes daily training to be spiritually fit to compete in spiritual warfare.
For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Eph 6:12
Goal of Christ-follower from rebirth: Christ-likeness….
Problem with the doctrine of instant satisfaction. The curse of our age is superficiality. (Richard Foster)
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Cor 5:17
For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstbornamong many brothers and sisters. Rom 8:29
…train yourself to be godly. 8 “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 1 Tim 4:7-8
Everyone tries but few train.
Problem with Trying and not Training
1) You will get tired of trying with no or inconsistent results.
So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Gal 6:9
2) You will suffer guilt from superficiality. (Fake)
Then the Lord said to him, “You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and wickedness! Luke 11:39
3) You will be judgmental and proud.
And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. 7 They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi. Matt 23:6-7
4) You will pick the commands you think are important to measure your and others spirituality.
Blind guides! You strain your water so you won’t accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel! Matt 23:24
5) You will be unable to resist temptation and will be lead by the world more than the Holy Spirit.
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. Gal 5:15
When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Gal 5:19-21
