What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger
You Don’t Have to be a Super Hero #4
Truth: You are never really in control of your circumstances. People are going to hurt you and use you and leave you.
Truth: God is faithful. (Remind yourself regularly)
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Cor 10:13
Sometimes it can seem like life can’t get much worse.
- Joseph was hated at home by those who should have loved him.
But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him. Gen 37:4
Let’s just throw him into this empty cistern here in the wilderness. Then he’ll die without our laying a hand on him.” Gen 37:22
- Joseph was an exemplary employee but was victimized and lied about at work.
6-7 Joseph was a strikingly handsome man. As time went on, his master’s wife became infatuated with Joseph and one day said, “Sleep with me.”
8-9 He wouldn’t do it. He said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master doesn’t give a second thought to anything that goes on here—he’s put me in charge of everything he owns. He treats me as an equal. The only thing he hasn’t turned over to me is you. You’re his wife, after all! How could I violate his trust and sin against God?” Gen 39-7-9 The Message
“The Hebrew slave, the one you brought to us, came after me and tried to use me for his plaything. When I yelled and screamed, he left his coat with me and ran outside.” Gen 39:17
- Joseph was dumped by his friends.
And please remember me and do me a favor when things go well for you. Mention me to Pharaoh, so he might let me out of this place. Gen 40:14
Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer, however, forgot all about Joseph, never giving him another thought. Gen 40:23
Pain will make you stronger if you choose to:
1) Stay on course with God.
Potiphar, the Jailer, and Pharoah gave Joseph control and trust enabling him to have influence and power as a slave. Gen 39:6, 39:22-23, 41:38
“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. Luke 16:10
2) Live according to Holy Values.
8 But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. 9 No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” Gen 39:8-9
She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible. Gen 39:10
When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God. Pro 14:32
3) Remind yourself that God is in control and makes all work for the good according to His purpose.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Pro 3:5-6
