After a life of nothing but good, Jesus is abandoned by all.
A sign was fastened above Jesus’ head, announcing the charge against him. It read: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”Matt 27:37
Jesus remained quiet.
45 At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 46 At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[j] lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”Matt 27:45-46
Jesus did not cry out till He no longer felt God’s presence.
Jesus was experiencing the absence of light and experiencing the presence of sin.
He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. 1 Peter 2:24
Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. Gal 3:13
Jesus freed us from the curse of darkness.
For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! Eph 5:8
- The unbeliever lives in darkness. (Separated)
- The believer will at times feel abandoned by God because of situational pain.
When the believer asks why, God answers…
9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9
The more we know God (in the light) the less we will ask why.
God is always for us and with us …..
For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstbornamong many brothers and sisters. 30 And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. 31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Rom 8:29-31
For the pre-Christian to come out of the darkness…
A: Admit you are not perfect and need God
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Rom 3:23
…if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9
B: Believe that Jesus died as a sacrifice for my sins and rose from the dead and is alive today
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Rom 10:9
God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Eph 2:8
C: Commit to making Jesus Christ Lord of your life.
Changed: you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9
