If I Doubt, I Don’t Have Faith

Series:  Actually, That’s Not in the Bible #5

…we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.  Eph 6:12

The devil encourages doubt with deceipt.

“Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt?” Lk 24:38

The opposite of faith is not doubt.  Its unbelief.

Three Levels of Christian Belief

 1)    Casual – believe in God…(practical atheists)

2)    Convenient – if it does not cost me

3)    Committed – God’s will over personal.

Casual and convenient Christianity fuels doubt.

Committed Christianity exercises your faith and over rides doubt.

Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”  23 “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”  Mark 9:22-24

Encouraging Promises

  •  Jesus sacrificed Himself because He loves you.
  • You are created for God’s pleasure.
  • You have been reborn spiritually for God’s work
  • And….salvation can not be earned or lost.

For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.  Gal 5:4

 Pushing Through Doubt

Myth:  All problems are punishment from God.

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. 2 “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”   3 “It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.  John 9:1-3

Pain tests and exercises your faith

                                    Warns, teaches, strengthens

…when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.  James 1:2-4

God has experienced your pain and worse.

Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. 9 In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him.  Heb 5:8-9

 Make good God centered choices

Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom.  Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. Prov 9:10

Hope comes in living for the hope of perfection.

I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”  Rev 21:3-4
