I talk to Christians all the time who are not confident when telling people about their faith.  We are not all supposed to be like Billy Graham.  But..We are all influencers.  Are you influencing people toward or away from God?

God’s Plan is Influence

God’s plan for Christians:  Influence

 The Command

go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. Matt 28:19-20

 The Power:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  Acts 1:8

 The Way:   Integrity and love.

…make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.  2 Pet 2:5-7

People want to see how Christians handle life.

  • Temptation
  • Authority
  • Relationships
  • Pain

…let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matt 5:16 NLT

Be careful how you live among your unbelieving neighbors. Even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will believe and give honor to God when he comes to judge the world.  1 Pet 2:12

 1)    Be good.  Avoid trouble.

I warn you to keep away from evil desires because they fight against your very souls.  1 Pet 2:11

You are not slaves; you are free. But your freedom is not an excuse to do evil. You are free to live as God’s slaves.  Vs. 16

It is God’s will that your good lives should silence those who make foolish accusations against you. Vs. 15

2)    Respect authority, Christians and pre-Christians

For the Lord’s sake, accept all authority–the king as head of state, 14 and the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish all who do wrong and to honor those who do right.  Vs. 13,14

The value of respect is a strong influence.  “People don’t care how much you know, till they know how much you care.”

Show respect for everyone. Love your Christian brothers and sisters. Fear God. Show respect for the king. Vs. 17

You who are slaves must accept the authority of your masters. Do whatever they tell you–not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are harsh. 19 For God is pleased with you when, for the sake of your conscience, you patiently endure unfair treatment.  Vs. 18,19

 3)    Handle pain like Christ.

suffering is all part of what God has called you to. Christ, who suffered for you, is your example. Follow in his steps. Vs. 21

He never sinned, and he never deceived anyone. 23 He did not retaliate when he was insulted. When he suffered, he did not threaten to get even. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. Vs. 22,23

For God is pleased with you when, for the sake of your conscience, you patiently endure unfair treatment. Vs. 19
