Relationships will always be complicated.

Why:  Spiritual warfare.

We have been created for relationships.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.  Gen 2:18

8 Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.”   Luke 4:8

The devil wants to keep us disconnected from God and people.

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.  Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.  1 Pet 5:7-8

We have a Natural Human Fear of Rejection

Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but to trust the LORD means safety. Prov 29:25 NLT

  •  Selfishness
  • Anger
  • Controlled by others or feel a need to control others.
  • Codependency
  • Hypersensitive to opinions of others.
  • Insensitive to others.
  • Depression reinforced by negative self-talk.
  • Leads to a negative witness for Christ.

Simplifying Relationships

 1)     Make God your most important relationship.

The Lord is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid?
The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? Ps 27:1

39 Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good.  40 I long to obey your commandments!  Renew my life with your goodness.  Ps 119:39-40

Deflect the harsh words of my critics—but what you say is always so good.  See how hungry I am for your counsel; preserve my life through your righteous ways!  The Message

 2)     Stop worshiping people.

13 Yet you have forgotten the Lord, your Creator, the one who stretched out the sky like a canopy and laid the foundations of the earth.  Will you remain in constant dread of human oppressors? Will you continue to fear the anger of your enemies? Is 51:13

Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.  Gal 1:10

What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Rom 8:31

 3)     Learn and experience how much God loves you.

God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.  Eph 1:5

21 This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.  Col 1:21-22

 4)  Get past my past……
