I love to read. In fact, I usually have at least three books going at a time. Reading has not always been important to me. I got out of high school without ever finishing a book. Thank God for Cliff Notes.
I started reading right after I felt God was calling me to serve as a Christian Counselor. It’s not that I just started reading because I enjoyed reading. I became a learner. I love to read because I love to learn. I love to read a variety of subjects because I like to think I can sit across the table from anyone and carry on a decent conversation. I like being awake because of the opportunities to learn.
In a new study, reported by the AP, one in four adults say they read no books at all in the past year. In 2004, a National Endowment for the Arts report titled “Reading at Risk” found only 57 percent of American adults had read a book in 2002, a four percentage point drop in a decade. The study faulted television, movies and the Internet.
The study also revealed that people who never attend church are twice as likely to read than people who attend church regularly. Now what do you think is up with that? As a Christian, I feel I can be a much better carrier of the Gospel if I can understand and talk to the pre-Christian. All great leaders say that leaders are readers. And if the definition of a leader is a person who influences others than it only seems logical that leaders should read.
